Product Review : Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil

anyone who knows anything about the infamous multi-step korean skin-care routine knows that the double cleanse is pretty much what everything else rests on. the idea is that you're supposed to go in with an oil or balm cleanser first, followed by a water-based wash to ensure all makeup and impurities are completely removed.

thanks to @ImanAbdulRahim, i gained a lot of skincare-related knowledge from her Twitter. since i am new to the korean skincare regime, i basically relied on her product recommendations, preferably affordable options from the drugstore, as choosing the right one is super tricky for me since i have a lot of skin issues:

skin type: oily but dehydrated and and sensitive
skin concerns: PIH (dark acne scars), acne prone, pores

long story short, i've been using the Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil for a couple of months now, and here's my verdict.

Simple Hydrating Cleansing Oil (125ml) is mineral oil-free and formulated to easily remove makeup. it has a pure grapeseed oil base which is thin and light in texture.

the oil is fragrance-free, with a limited number of ingredients. as per instructed, make sure you apply the oil to dry hands onto dry face before rinsing off with warm water.

it comes in a slim plastic bottle, which i thought is great as you can easily bring it along to travel. the locking cap is a bonus, but after a while the content leaked when i took it out in a bag, so i guess it's not that travel-friendly after all?

it slides easily over skin due to its runny consistency. it's thicker than water yet still has a very light, subtle scent. this isn’t an artificial fragrance, it’s merely the scent you get from the grape seed oil itself.

i didn't have high expectations for this so i was happy when it didn't disappoint me. to be honest, the first time i used this, it felt like i was smearing cooking oil on my face. i wouldn't say it's uncomfortable, but rather an odd experience.

if you’ve never used cleansing oil before, it is meant to be used on dry skin at first, massaged on, and warm water is later added to emulsify the formula. when water is added, i was surprised by how easily the formula breaks down, goes milky, and rinses away. it doesn’t leave skin oily nor shiny nor greasy afterwards. however it is advisable to use warm water to take the oil off, as it will leave a film on your face if you use cold water.

i've been using this product for a couple of months now and i can say that it's a good cheap alternative to high-end cleansing oil. if i'm wearing a lot of makeup, i will wipe it away with Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin or Simple Kind to Skin Facial Wipes first, which then i will follow with this cleansing oil and a face wash as i usually do afterwards.

so far it doesn't irritate my skin nor cause breakouts. the formula does a good job at breaking up tenacious sunscreen, face and eye makeup by whisking it away without leaving my skin tight after usage. it is gently emollient without making me even more oily.

the price is affordable, in my opinion (RM40++ but you could get it for around RM30++ during sale). might not be the best on the market, but certainly a good value for the money. a good option if you are looking to try an oil cleanser as i believe it is readily available in most Watsons or Guardian.

@ImanAbdulRahim also suggested several other cleansing oils from the drugstore, such as:
  • Biore Cleansing Oil (purple plastic bottle)
  • Senka Perfect Watery Oil
  • ZA Deep Cleansing Oil
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansing Oil (blue/pink/green bottle for different concerns)
  • Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Cleansing Oil (best used for dry, sensitive skin)

i've checked some of the ingredients list during my visit to the local drugstore. the product listed above contains either mineral oil, alcohol or fragrance. as i have a sensitive skin, i find that the Simple Kind To Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil is the best option as it is free from all those three.

bottom line, i will probably repurchase, but am still looking for "The One".
